Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner
The CEA Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Awards Dinner, held in January, is the oldest such celebration in Columbus. Each year, we recognize those who have demonstrated efforts to keep alive the ideas and spirit of the late Dr. King with two awards: the Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award and the Helen Jenkins Davis Award.
The King award recognizes community leaders and has included the Mayor, Columbus City Council members, state representatives, leaders of organizations and many others. The Davis Award is named in honor of the school district’s first black teacher. We present it to a CCS teacher who has worked to promote social justice, diversity and human and civil rights.
CEA also hosts a nationally recognized keynote speaker. This list has included John Lewis, Andrew Young, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and Cornel West.
CEA Awards & Retirement Dinner
Each May we honor our retirees and our scholars at the CEA Awards & Retirement Banquet. All retirees attend this dinner for free. It is also free for Senior Faculty representatives and other honorees. During the evening we also recognize some of our members and community supporters, including CEA Friend of Education, Outstanding Faculty Representative in each CEA district and Outstanding CEA Member. We also award scholarships to some very talented students whose parents are members of CEA. Check your CEA Voice in April for the date and details.
Fall Fling
Each fall CEA welcomes members for a relaxed afternoon and early evening social event featuring music, food, beer and raffle prizes. This is a great opportunity to get to know your colleagues and the CEA staff. Stay tuned for details. Fall Fling in 2018 was held in September at the Hilton Columbus at Easton. Attendees got to meet some of the candidates running for state and local offices and spend time chatting with old friends and new. This is a great event. Watch The Voice for details.
